Noniam habemus papam
Seit bald einer Woche hat die (römisch-katholische) Welt wieder einen irdischen Stellvertreter Christi als Nachfolger des wegen gesundheitlichen Gründen zurückgetretenen Papst Benedikt XVI.: Papst Franziskus, Kardinal Jorge Maria Bergolio SJ aus Argentinien.
Vieles ist speziell am neuen Papst:
er ist der erste aussereuropäische Papst seit dem 8. Jh. (!),
er ist der erste lateinamerikanische Papst überhaupt (!!). Wenn man bedenkt, dass in den letzten Jahrzehnten eine noch immer andauernde Verschiebung der Weltchristenheit von Norden nach Süden stattgefunden hat und heute 75% der Katholiken in der südlichen Hemisphäre beheimatet sind wurde es doch langsam Zeit, ein Kirchenoberhaupt zu haben, das diesen Trend auch abbildet.
Er ist Jesuit. Die Jesuiten sind ein katholischer Orden, der auf Ignatius von Loyola zurückgeht. Im Zuge der Reformation entwickelte sich der Orden als Gemeinschaft, die eine verstärkte Christusbeziehnung pflegen will. Exerzitien, Armut, Ehelosigkeit und Gehorsam sind ihre Schlagwörter. Jesuiten tragen keine Ordenskleider und engagieren sich in der Flüchlingspolitik, in Schulen und in sozialen Einrichtungen. Sie tragen ein SJ hinter dem Namen.
Er wählte den Papstnamen Franziskus und beruft sich auf den Ordensgründer der Franziskaner, Franziskus von Assisi. Auch sie verpflichten sich zur Armut und konzentrieren sich stärker auf die Schrift, als dies die römisch-katholische Kirche in der Gründungszeit (13.Jh.) des Orden getan hat.
In der ausserkristlichen Ökumene scheint er offen und kontaktfreudig zu sein.
Vor diesem Hintergrund könnte man glauben, dass er sich ganz speziell den Armen verpflichtet fühlt und nach Lateinamerikanischer Manier eine Theologie der Befreiung predigt. Das ist nur teilweise der Fall. Verschiedene Medien werfen ihm sogar zu wenig Distanz zur argentinischen Militätdiktatur der 70er/80er Jahre vor. Doch ruft er zur Bewahrung der Schöpfung (also Umweltschutz) auf und will Arme und Ausgeschlossene beachten.
Haben wir LGBTIQ nun endlich unseren Papst? Wie hat es der neue Papst mit der Homosexualität? Nun ja, er hat es eben nicht. Argentinien gilt als erstaunlich vortschrittliches Land, was die Rechte der LGBT angeht. Seit 2003 ist in den grossen Städten sogar eine Eintragung der Partnerschaft möglich, seit 2010 landesweit. Kardinal Bergoglio kritisierte diese Haltung scharf mit den Worten “Es ist eine destruktive Anmaßung gegen den Plan Gottes”.
Das muss uns aber keineswegs verwundern. Wie ich schon mehrfach betont habe und gerne wiederhole: Keiner wird Papst mit einer liberalen Haltung! Wer in der kirchlichen Hierarchie aufsteigen will, also Bischof, Kardinal, sogar Papst werden will, MUSS sich den Gepflogenheiten anpassen und traditionelle römisch-katholische Werte vertreten. Eine massgebliche Veränderung wird meiner Meinung nach nicht von oben her kommen, sondern – wie so viele davor auch – von der Basis her angeregt. Die Initiative der beiden Basler katholischen Kirchen zur Gleichstellung ist ein Anfang.
Ich ermutige alle kirchenkritischen Homos das Gespräch mit kirchennahen Menschen zu suchen, sie nach ihren persönlichen Meinungen zu fragen und dieselbe Offenheit und Akzeptanz an den Tag zu legen, die wir LGBTIQ von der Gesellschaft ach so stark verlangen. Denn: von nichts kommt nichts.
Performance Art? What’s that?
Usually on overcast or rainy Sundays I go and visit some museum, especially since living in Basel where, with more than 40 museums, the density of museums must be one of the highest (at least) in Europe. But today I am stuck at work, so I decided to highjack a little of my working-time to write about a topic in art. Performance Art, probably one of the least well received art forms by the masses and often believed to be a recent invention lacking in purpose or real message, might date back as far as the Antiquity when Greek philosophers Antisthenes and Diogenes praticed a form of performance art which earned them the sobriquet of cynic (meaning “dog” here)

because Diogenes often played a dog (For reference listen to the following BBC 4 Radio Podcast: “In Our Time” with Melvyn Bragg on Cynicism). Performance art is so loosely defined that it is difficult to really give it a good succinct definition. It can be a number of things, but most of the time it involves the artist(s) or one or more performers orchestrated by the artist(s) and executing a certain performance. This can be a very spontaneous performance, reacting to inputs from the public or the surroundings, or a very strictly planned and scripted action reminiscent of street theater or nouveau cirque. There are no particular stylistic rules to be followed, pretty much anything goes. An important distinction exists between performance art, which is art executed live (in front of a public or cameras), and performing arts, which is a class of arts that includes theater and dance for instance. Also the term “street performances” is distinct and although it might include performance art it also, and mainly, comprises street theater and other forms of performances being executed on the street rather than on a scene in an auditorium.
In the past five years I have had the chance of seeing some powerful pieces such as Marina Abramović‘s Imponderabilia (first performed in 1977 by her with her partner back then, the artist Ulay, re-enacted in 2010 at the MoMa and in 2012 at Art Basel with other performers)

but also came across performances which I will qualify as “wanna be performance art” performances… in other words performances of lesser quality. But I guess performance art is like any other form of art, there are good artists and bad ones. Gutachten begutachten
Nach Stunden des Möchtegern-in-gescheite-Bücher-Reinschauens habe ich also ein Gutachten zu einem/r BewerberIn verfasst. (Details gibts natürlich keine, das ist alles streng vertraulich!) Dabei habe ich frischfröhlich nach alter Gutenbergmanier aus Renzensionen abgeschrieben. Oder hat jemand tatsächlich erwartet, dass ich innerhalb von (sehr ausgebuchten) vier Wochen eine Dissertation (400 S), eine Habilitationsschrift (500 S) und drei Aufsätze lese und bewer
te?
Am letzten Donnerstag war die Sitzung, in der wir anhand der Gutachten 6-8 BewerberInnen auswählen sollten, die Ende April ihr Können in Lehre und Forschung und Charisma vor versammelter Fakultät beweisen sollten. Und siehe: mein Gutachten wird von einem der NT-Professoren gelobt: “Sind Sie aus dem Fachbereich?” – “Ja also, ich bin NT-HiWi..” – “Das haben Sie also sehr gut erkannt und wunderbar beschrieben. Schön, wie Sie auch kritisch die Herangehensweise an diese Thematik in der Dissertation beleuchtet haben. Dochdoch, sehr gut.” Und die studentische Vertreterin ist ganze 10 cm gewachsen dabei… Ich bin angekommen!
Die Kommission begutachtet Gutachten, diskutiert, wägt ab und einigt sich auf 7 Personen. Sie werden einen Vortrag halten müssen mit anschliessender Diskussion, ein Miniseminar für Studenten leiten und anschliessend der Kommission Rede und Antwort stehen. Und ratet mal, wer von der Kommission am meisten zu tun haben wird? Genau, die studentische Vertraterin. Also ich! Die Profs können während den Miniseminaren Kaffee trinken gehen, die studentische Vertreterin wird überall anwesend sein müssen. Na bravo!

Natur Messe Basel
What a wonderfully cold yet sunny day we had in Basel this past Sunday. Not one cloud in the sky. Beautiful. So naturally I had plans to go and spend my day within the windowless halls of the Messe Basel. Not at Muba like most people, but at the Natur Messe. I had little prior idea about the Messe, just that it had something to do with nature and sustainable development. So there I was browsing through the booths, getting accosted by association workers and activists trying to make me sign petitions at almost every booth on the ground floor of the Hall. Moving onto the other floor of the exposition I was now being accosted by various sales reps trying to sell their sustainable, natural, bio or vegan products. All in all I think I saw about 20% of booths mainly concerned with information about nature and sustainable development and the science and law behind it (these booths were presented mainly by swiss national parcs and governmental agencies such as the DEZA). But unfortunately the bulk of the exposition was about selling, if not products then selling activist campaigns. I came out of the whole experience a little disappointed I must admit. Maybe I awaited too much, or maybe just something else. Anyhow, I think I ought to have stayed outside, enjoying the beautiful weather by taking a walk in the nature around Basel rather than stay inside getting accosted by sales reps and activists trying to sell me the beautiful nature that, listening to them, only appears to be a relic at best.
I should say, though, that there is no doubt in my mind that we need to continue doing efforts (a lot!) to preserve our environment and become less of a nuisance on the planet. But, I just don’t know that it will do any true good for me to buy ayurvedic sandals or give money to some political/environmental/animal rights NGO, that may or may not be efficient (read up on this topic in our upcoming post on giving efficiently) and may or may not really understand ecology (the science) and use critical thinking and applied rationality (read up on these topics in our upcoming post on critical thinking) rather than follow emotional ecological ideologies. Anyhow, I guess this event was not really my cup of tea, that’s all.
